Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986. At that time, women often received lower advances, fewer reviews and were discriminated in other ways by the publishing industry. The first president of the national organization was Sara Paretsky. Today there are over 50 chapters and there are thousands of members across the country, both female and male. Not all members are writers. Book sellers, readers, and anyone interested in the mystery genre is invited to join SinC.
Sisters in Crime mission statement: To combat discrimination against women in the mystery field, educate publishers and the general public to inequities in the treatment of female authors, and raise the level of awareness of their contribution to the field.
SinC Chapter, Murder We Write is affiliated with the national organization and adheres to its statements and policies.
Though small, we are a fun loving and accepting group. We have interesting programs and guest speakers and provide support for members in the Triad area of North Carolina.
Our chapter was founded by Lynette Hall Hampton, a SinC member, who wanted to belong to a local organization of mystery writers. She was living in the Triad area of North Carolina and the only NC chapter at the time, The Tarheel Gumshoes, was 90 miles away. Lynette decided to start her own chapter.
Using advice garnered online and from other SinC chapters as well as from Terry Hoover, President of Tarheel Gumshoes Lynette printed bookmarks and left them at various bookstores in the Triad area for distribution. She also advertised at libraries announcing the first meeting on August 23, 2003 at Barnes and Nobles in High Point North Carolina.
Twenty-five people showed up for the first meeting and the Murder We Write Chapter was born. Though the meeting place has changed a few times, and members have come and gone, the chapter continues.
